Pergola

I am about to build a free standing Pergula over my patio.

12 x 14 approx 10 ft high asking the following:

Are 6 x 6 posts (4 each corner) needed instead of 4 x 4
Considering using 4 2 x 10 as rafters instead of 2x8 due to span

Any thoughts?

Thanks

For the those spans on a load bearing pergola 2x8 are fine for joists. The trick with perfumes is getting the proportions to look good. Anything 12 feet in the air doesn't look good on 4x4 posts so I would go with 6x6. 2x8 or 2x10 can be decided by what looks proportionally appropriate.

Agrree - 4x4 would look too spindly.
