Panel Above Front Door Coming Loose

I have a wood decorative panel above my front door. It is coming loose and a big gap is forming between boards. I think I need to screw it in but am unsure how to find studs underneath it or how long or type of screw I need.

A picture would help. What type of siding do you have?

Aluminum.

usually within 12 inches above a door is a door header so there is something to nail to. if your piece is higher then 12" then that will not work. I'm guessing a 2 1/2" screw. pics will help a bunch...
