Paint some cabinets? (Garage)

Since I moved in here 2 years ago, the cabinets in my garage have been annoying the heck out of me. They are mostly out-of-the-box cabinets from Menards, stained but not covered with urethane. I also have another tall cabinet that was in my former laundry room, and some wall cabinets that were given to me.

My desired garage total renovation is still many years away. I have been thinking about painting all the cabinets in my garage. Maybe not the ones on the wall, but definitely the ones under the countertop and the tall one next to it.

I was thinking of using my craftsman toolboxes for a color pallet. Maybe, maybe not. I thought about red frames with black doors/drawers or visa-versa. Or should I just go with a lighter neutral color?

Here are a couple pictures I just snapped.

I'm into the multi-colored look for informal areas.

I think a color scheme based on those of your tool boxes could work. That is going to be a lot of red and black though. Fine if you have the light. Could end up rather dark if not.

And, almost hate to bring it up but you do have that Completely Useless By September (CUBS) decor going on. Are you sure you want to clash with it? I am a die hard fan myself and live not far from Wrigley Field. It gets harder every year.

Yes, some Cubs decor on the wall there. My last garage was painted all team colors: cabinet frames were blue, with white doors, and blue & red trim up in the garage. Don't think I have a photo handy. I thought about doing that again, but I'm not sure - kinda have an "it's already been done" feeling.

Any other thoughts or suggestions from anyone? I'm off work this coming week, and my honey-do list is about done - due to busting my butt yesterday. Suggestions on paint TYPE to use? Should I use an exterior acrylic, since it's out in the garage?

I would, if it's not a conditioned (heated) garage.

It does have a ventless-gas heater, but it's typically only turned-on when I do some work out there.

I would use an exterior too. I would also stick with more neutral colors. My reasoning is based on a future sale of the house, which may not be a foreseeable circumstance for you. It seems like every 5 years I move.
