I spend hours every day removing spammers, they're relentless. Some days I personally ban hundreds, add that to the other mods and.......
If we did not, you guys wouldn't be able to help anyone here because all you'd see is spam posts. The real people would be buried.
There is no pay for us, just the (real or imagined) gratitude from all of our good members.
But Jim, you do realize that spam is not the ONLY problem you'll face moderating, right? You ALSO get to babysit adult toddlers! Mouthy, obnoxious, whiny, angry, moronic #@$#!#! that are only on your forum to cause trouble. (trolls) We had a guy not too long ago who kept returning with different nicks just so he could post pics of himself flipping the bird to all of us/you. Just because one of the electric guys told him he was doing unsafe wiring.
*Good luck!*

They THINK they're slick.... 99% are banned before they can do anything.
Here's a "for instance": http://www.diychatroom.com/f38/new-member-160151
they sign in, type some garbage in broken English and leave. Then return the next day and (try to) add spam.... members also help catch hundreds of these idiots. (Thanks!)

What I like is - the spammers wait until it's really late at night/really early in the morning, and they see that there are no "mods" on.
Then, they start posting in multiple threads.
They're clever!
That's the way it is.
What really bothers me is the fact that some of the "live", links that they
post are not just for "adverts" - they're malicious!
They post links - if you go there - there's a chance that your computer might
be hijacked, infected, etc...
It's not advertising - it's money!
You get a screen that comes up and it says something to the effect that
you're computer is compromised -
It says that the "FBI" is sending you this.
Right!!
(My boss got one of these on one of his computers - no fun to remove it!!)
They wanted him to send 200 dollars (US) - to "fix" his computer!
Stuff like this isn't advertising - it's basically, extortion!
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!
Happy Halloween!!

The "FBI" thing can be removed by following these instructions.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/viru...pak-ransomware
A neighbor got the same scam virus, he thought it was real. A quick web search found the solution.

There’s been quite a few times that post have got me busting up laughing and maybe one or two that had me blowing coffee out of my nose at 5am. And those certainly remain memorable for the day at least.
There’s only one that is still stuck in my head and from time to time no matter what I’m doing I think about it and still get a laugh. That would be when HV realized that the tile he had installed over carpet probably wasn’t such a good idea.
I suppose what keeps me coming back is the unpredictability of this place and knowing the next gut busting saga could be just one click away and if I can help a few people here and there along the way well that’s great too.

I remember that tile over carpet thread. Wonder what ever happened to that guy?

Vinny was quite the colorful character. He was convinced that everyone here was conspiring against him. He liked starting threads that the only possible outcome would be a train wreck.
He started a thread in “site help” requesting and explaining why he should be a moderator. I’m sure I wasn't the only one that busted up over that one.
I imagine Vinny finally found the train wreck he was looking for and today he’s resting in troll heaven.
don't tell anyone but i heard dm still has his remains locked up in one of his magic boxes.

All right! Who ratted me out???
The only site suggestion I could find was this thread, where I told him he had been considered as a mod. Is that what you were remembering?

 That isn’t it, keep digging.
I remember him asking to be a mod specifically for the “off topic” section.
He was one of your buds, how can you not remember that.

Crap…a homework assignment.
I’ll look in the morning when I have more patience for such things.

I do think it was "after" the crowning of Gary and Mike though.
