New room/closet - carpet or cabinets first?

I have a newly constructed room/walk-in-closet in my basement. It is going to be carpeted with the rest of the finished area - in the future. I plan on installing a 6' run of base cabinetry, with a countertop, and wall cabinets above it.

My question is - when should I install the base cabinets? Should I install them before the carpet is installed and have the carpet run up against them, or wait and install them after carpet is [eventually] installed? I think the former is correct, but I don't want to have to remove them and re-install them because I jumped the gun.

Thanks!

i dont know what's "proper" but it seems to me that you would do it before. If you do it after the carpet is down, and something happens and you have to replace the carpet, you would have to uninstall all of the cabinets in order to do that.

I agree, that would make the most sense. I guess I've never installed (or had) base cabinets in a room with carpet. It's always been a hard surface (wood/tile/vinyl) and the cabinets were installed on top of the surface. Not sure if that's proper or not, but the way my last 2 houses were done.

hmm im not sure but i dont think thats the way it should be. In my kitchen i intend to install base cabinets first and run the wood up to them, because it will be easier to replace a damaged spot. I dont honestly see how you would install them over carpet. Seems to me that they would be nearly impossible to level, not having a hard surface beneath.

True. Common sense would seem to dictate to install the cabinets first. Thanks for making me think with common sense for a second here.
