Need Some Help with Estimating/Labor prices

I'm steping into this business with blinders on. I'm fairly well rounded
in the Construction and Remodeling fields. My problem is, I never actually had to give a price quote or Estimate. I've been getting my feet wet with friends and family. But I seem to low balling myself., coming away with little or nothing to show for it. Is there a standard as to what you charge ex: per foot/ pre hour/. I have an upcoming basement frame out, and don't want to get burned as it is a fairly decent sized job.

any advice or help would be greatly appreciated...

But if you post that question over there, you will be subject to abuse.

Here is the simplistic answer to your question for any given job:

Price all the materials to be used in the job down to the last screw, including consumables such as tape and poly. Add 20%

Guesstimate your time, and any helpers time. Add 50%, then markup your wages 20%.

If you are still buying tools, add 1 or 2 into the cost of each project.

Once you add that up, mark the total up another 20%, and you should be able to at least bring home lunch money. As you learn your costs better, you can tighten down the markups.
Advice is free, Lessons begin at 75 bucks an hour.

Since this is a DIY site, we discourage contractors requesting assistance with pricing their jobs. is a much better resource for you.
