Ditto. Just don't go with the cheap ones.
We have two of these. Rather than turning on a light, ours have a beeper inside the house. One is aimed across our driveway. The other across a second parking area.
If you consider a fair amount of break-ins are from people who have been to your place for so-called legitimate reasons, it is satisfying to meet people in the driveway, often before they can even get out of the vehicle.
I've surprised more than one UPS driver this way.

And don't mention to too many people that you will be gone. I love those Facebook posts where people say things like "Can't wait, leave for Florida for 4 weeks tomorrow! The dogs will be at the kennel all sad without us". It's like a criminal smorgasbord....
Big ditto on the facebook notes....

As for patrol checks....they don't really do any good....

What is more important is that someone picks up your mail and news papers. And if your gone more than a week....have someone mow your lawn.

It also helps to have someone park in your driveway at night....

Good neighbors are the best thing to have when you go on vacation...

Even if you are on the right track, you will still get run over if you just sit there.
