Hope I don't need to make new bases for my porch columns (8'x8'). The old ones have rotted and I can't find replacements at the local home improvement store. Does anyone know where to buy them? If not, how difficult is it to make new ones?
It's unclear to me what you need, any chance of a picture?
Are the bottoms of the posts rotted out; do they just sit on the porch, or are they structurally attached to the framing. Are they wood, brick, or paper-mache`.
Need some more info, if possible.
Thanks. And a pic is worth a hundred or so worthless replies like mine.
If I understand you correctly this isn't a huge job. Of course as Renovator points out a photo is needed to know for sure.
If the base of the column is decorative and not load baring then making one should be relatively straight forward. If the base is supporting the weight of the column (and the roof) then I would suggest buying one if you are at all unsure. You don't want to take risks with the structure!
I once made base's by using plastic flower pots for a mold.
Filled 'em with premixed concrete mix.
Once the concrete is set, tap around the outside to loosen 'em up and pop out your base.
