Need help diagnosing broken garage door opener

-Lift Master 1/2 HP Security +

-press button one time, nothing. Press again, motor makes noise like it is turning but chain drive doesn't move whether door release is latched or unlatched.

Check the sprocket on top of the motor. If it doesn't turn when you hear the motor run, the shaft might be broken. The sprocket could also be stripped.
How old is the unit?

Unplug the unit. Take the top cover off and look at the chain sprocket as previously stated. If it looks okay, take off the case and see if there are pieces of debris from the drive gear laying in the cover. Look at the drive gear and see if the teeth are stripped. This is where I would start first.

If the sprocket is broken or gear is stripped then your door is in need of balancing, new springs, or rollers because it is binding somewhere or too heavy for the GDO. The GDO is not made to actually 'lift' the door--the springs do this. Correct the door problem before you replace the GDO parts/new opener.

I agree with afollower.

Most drive gears/worm gears/etc are plastic or a combination of metal meshing with plastic. Eventually something is going to wear out.
If the door isn't balanced it will tear up a new opener.
