Need Guidance On How To Build Shelf In Corner Of Garage

1st time homeowner here and just looking to get my grind on!

I have this recessed area of the garage near the door and I would love to build some kind of shelf like structure above the garbage can and put my Winter firewood there..

However I dont' have the slightest idea on how do so? I need a 101 here on how best to do this!

Its about a 3-4 ft area.. see pics!

Thanks!

Because of the weight & mess involved I'll suggest keeping the wood low. It's also a way small area to fit much firewood (cord = 8' x4' x4' well stacked).

If that is the ONLY spot available then keep the wood outside. If the plan is for keeping just a few pieces (one weeks burning?) in the garage at a time then maybe and that brings us back to a shelf.

The down and dirty git 'r done shelf:
2x4 cleat on the wall just above the trash can.
Two more 2x4's set at 45 on each side of the trash can (to brace the shelf).
3/4" sheet (ply, osb, etc) for the shelf surface.

hth

Do NOT put your winter wood in the garage unless it is a stand-alone structure and you don't care what happens to it. Also do not keep wood stacked against your house or garage. Make yourself a wood rack or grab a couple of used pallets and keep the wood there with top covered with a tarp. Ron

For the million dollar answer...."tell em what he will win Ron"?

All joking aside, google how carpenter ants and termites find new homes 😇

This is true not a good idea to even stack it close to any structure.

WOW, really? I had no idea, I seen urrbody has their wood right up next to their house..

Learning something new everyday!!!

Does this apply to wood thats been chopped and sat outside to dry for over a year too?

So how do yall store your wood? I got Alaska type winters out here and definitely don't want to be going outside in the winter to fetch some wood..

Really? You never did say how much wood you plan to keep around.

Check with your neighbors.
See how they do it.

Please listen to the good advice about bugs---

Store the wood outside--off the ground--at least a foot from any structure--with a cover over the top--a roof is nice--or a sheet of plywood--you want air to circulate around and through the wood--

when the weather is cold enough to make the bugs dormant, a small stock can be put into your unheated garage---

Do not store any firewood inside the house---you do not want wood borers or ants in your living room.

thank you my friend, this DEF helps.. will have to give this more thought!

Also definitely listening to the advise given here about bugs.. I honestly had no idea, been storing my wood in the garage for 4 years now...PHEW I must have dodged several bullets then!

Also to answer the, "look at what my neighbors do".. well from the several dozen neighbors I seen, they all just stalk it up to their house.. usually the back wall of the garage.. best I seen was about a 2" seperation between the wood and garage..

so 2 questions..

1. If the wood has been chopped and sat outside for a year or more, is is it still a danger??

2. I live in the city... I think i'm on a 1/4 acre lot... so don't have too much room, So perhaps what I need is some pics of how cityslickers store their wood on our much smaller back yards?

appreciate all the help and input I have been given!

The longer it sits, the more likely it is to have powder post beetles, carpenter ants, etc etc etc. ron

For mounting shelving, check into the french cleat method and determine if it would work for you. Google is overflowing with FC ideas.
