Need advice on how to screw thru a duct?

Hello. I just purchased a new vent cover, but I found that the none of the 8 screw holes on the cover match up to the holes on the duct. I tried using the screws that came with the cover to start new holes, but the screws would not go through the metal. Does anyone know what I can use to start the holes? Thanks for any info.

Normally use true sheet metal screws.. I like to use the hex head's with a drill driver. With a slight pressure they will start their own hole in the duct. If the screws you have arent working, maybe try a small pilot hole with a sharp drill bit.

Is this a new vent to let air into a room or a return grille?

Eight holes sounds like alot.

Thanks for your reply. You are right. It is a return grill.

Your welcome

If your old return grill was just a little old looking, try cleaning it up a little and hitting it with some spray paint. Its amazing how well they clean up if you wash the dust off, sand em a little, and then spray paint them.
