Need Advice for Final Inspection

We are close to having work completed on our home. A GC did a new roof, vinyl siding, soffits and seamless gutters with leaf guards. I have been handling this project pretty much solo as my hubby travels, so chances are I will be doing the final walk around with contractor. If anyone has any advice to offer me what to ask and what to look at specifically, I would really appreciate it. You know...should I look for something special on corners or on the siding seams, etc.? The GC has been great so far and I am impressed with the outcome as this point, but I would like to be sure I am covering all of my bases on the inspection. Thanks in advance

If your smart, you'll hire a private building inspector, an experienced one who is a member of the International Code Council, or the National Association of Certified Home Inspectors, or the American Society of Home Inspectors....better yet, a member of all three.

For a few hundred dollars your investment will be inspected and scrutinized by a professional who has two things in mind.

1. Is the construction consistent with current building standards.

2. Is the work done in a professional workmanlike manner.

Did you apply a permit for your construction? if you did, the best is the city inspector?

It is not just the workmanship you need to pay attention to, more importantly, is there anything missing or done illegally you need to ask the Contractor to correct... like when I renovated the basement, the inspector asked to relocate the furnance switch because it need to be outside the furnance room... things like that...

If you didn't apply for a permit, then go with inspects suggestion as even you don't have a permit, it is still much better that your construction fullfill the code...

The work that she described she had done to her home does not require a building permit.

Inspects , pretty much has the best suggestion based on your situation.
The only other thing I could offer is that you include a clause in your final sign-off, that mentions your situation and that the final approval is subject to 'so-in-so's' inspection and approval.
This, however, should not hold up the final payment.
