Mushrooms in the bath

I have a question regarding my bathroom floor. There are mushrooms growing out of the floor under the toilet shut off valve cap. How can we stop this and what has to be done? We just purchased the house and it was a foreclosure.

Harvest the crop and wash completely.
Put olive oil in a medium sized sauce pan. Add the mushrooms and simmer over a low heat. I like to add a nice Merlot along with some chopped garlic.
Salt to taste.

Fix the leak----remove the floor covering---repair rotted wood---replace floor covering---

And don't let a leak go for so long next time----

What's under the floor? Crawlspace? Finished basement? Unfinished basement?

And just to elaborate, the cause is damp, rotting wood that the fungus finds hospitable, and that is caused by a slow and steady leak in the water supply to the toilet, probably a connection to the shutoff valve or the valve itself. Since there is corrosion above the valve as well, the leak might be at the junction with the flush valve up at the tank.

If the wood is rotten enough to grow fungus, then it needs to be cut out and replaced. If you don't have the appetite to replace the entire floor covering, then slice it along the faux grout seam and peel it back out of the way to get to the wood underneath. Clean it up real good on the underside after the repair and then glue it back down. Not ideal but it's worth a shot.

Thank you Oh'Mike. I will pull that section of the floor and see what is under there. This was a foreclosure that we just purchased and moved into so this was a leak that preceeded us.

Michael, You have my permission to use the pic. I would love to see the article once you publish it and I can be proud of my mushrooms. :-) At least others will benefit from my issue.

The article link you sent was great and very interesting, made me actually go outside to look at our roof set-up.

CoconutPete, the unfinished section of the basement is under this bathroom. But this section houses the water heater, furnace, washer and dryer and main plumbing pipes for the house. Looking with a flashlight from directly under where the pipe goes through thd ceiling, I don't see any signs of rotting or damage, so hopefully it is localized to the subfloor in the bathroom.

That is likely a small patch of rot and shouldn't be a big deal to eliminate---
