Morter crumbling between bricks

Hi,

I have a situation where Morter crumbling between bricks. In some places it is so bad that there is almost nothing between the bricks.

I spoke to the local hardware store and they told me that there is a small creature that is causing the morter to crumble and that I will need to spray the area with a strong pesticide and then after that remorter the joints. Does this sound correct? Any feedback will be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Rottaj

Doubtful, but possible. I have never heard of cement eating critters. But freeze/thaw and a poor mortar mix to start, are usual culprits. Proper pointing requires that the joint is cleaned out at least 1 1/2" deep.

In any case, you definitely need to repoint.

I had not heard of such a critter either, but I noticed the OP is in Sydney Australia.... and whaddya know? They have something called a mortar bee. http://www.ausinspect.com.au/mortar bees.htm
I gather the bee's contribution is allowing water back behind the masonry and the water does the major damage.

Morter crumbling between bricks

Hi guys,

I discovered that it was tiny black ants that were responsible for my issue - I got this realy strong pestacide from the hardware store and have treated the brisk work twice and no new damage - so still have to fix the existing but it looks like it solved the usse!

Cheers,
