Got a new range and microwave hood. Can we install the hood to the wall before we purchase the cabinets and install those later?

I would wait for the cabinets first, and then install the hood.

Definately not a good idea, as the location would have to be laid out with extremely close tolerances. The only scenarios where I would recommend doing this in a typical DIY project is if both ends of the run of wall cabinets were open ended (do not butt against a wall), in which case you could later hang the microwave cabinet first (matching it to the microwave location exactly) and then work out in both directions; or if one end had a blind corner(which would give you some leeway for adjustment later. It is not an impossible task, but I would not recommend it if you do not have much expeience with laying out and hanging cabinets. Also, the micro/hood unit is designed to be suppported by the cabinet above it. The flimsy wall mounting plate cannot support the unit cantilivered out from the wall.

It would help if you stated the entire job concept. From the post it seems like you are redoing the kitchen, but in a backwards sort of scenario.
