Metal Harness Around Post

Hey all,

Truth be told, this is my first post. I would like to replicate a project, but am not knowledgeable enough to know how to adapt it to fit my context. I will be constructing wine bottle torches to place on my apartment balcony using the following directions:

http://www.designsponge.com/2009/08/...tle-torch.html

However, instead of nailing the copper top plate connector into a wooden post, I need to somehow attach it to a metal railing post that is 1 3/4" in length and width. I know that this should be possible, but I'm not sure what the best way to "wrap" an attachment around the metal post with these dimensions would be that could also connect to the copper top plate connector.

Does anyone have any ideas for this attachment?

Thanks!

Your landlord or the condo board has signed off on this flaming bottle idea and your deposit is not at risk right? Your neighbors will not be pissed if something goes wrong and their places go up in smoke? As a former property owner and property manager. Sounds of what you are up to make me very nervous.

I gave my tenants lots of latitude and room for creativity. Not so much when it came to flaming things though.

What sort of fuel were you planning to use in these things? There is a big lawsuit here at the moment here centering around a guy who has permanently lost his face thanks, the suit says, to a bottle torch design like you describe exploding. Sure your design concept is worth that? Now way a you could not make an outdoor candle work?

Of course the pi attorneys are litigating against the wine bottle manufacturer, the fuel manufactuer, the matchbook manufacturer and the dude will probably get a $7 figures from somebody. He is never going to have a face again though. Maybe he was butt ugly to start with and doesn't care.

sdsester, no different than the torches fueled by Alcohol for Chemistry Bunsen Burners.

Very different than lab alcohol burner. Bunsen burner burns pressurized gas, invented by Bunsen to replace previous less efficient, sometimes dangerous, burners including alkies. Lab alky burner's hardly ever used due to inherent danger of breakage, they have smaller reservoir and are used in lab conditions, sitting on table top in safe area by people who have been made aware of conditions. This is large breakable reservoir up in air being "used" by people who may have been burning some alcohol themselves. Away back when I was chemistry minor, and all of us being constantly drilled on safety, we had an event in lab involving broad based bunsen, spilled alcohol, and way pretty girl. Burner tipped, giant ball of flaming alcohol roared down lenghth of table (under other circumstance I would pay money to see that ) right into her face. Lucky she just temporarily lost most of hair and outer layer of epidermis. Had a sunburn for a semester, and when that gone she said, "It did clear up my acne."
All that bein said, and taking into consideration sd's concerns and dealing with the safety issues they are way cool. I was wondering what I was gonna do with blue bottles I saved, didn't much like idea of traditional blue bottle tree.
That was a great link, joe, some real nice holders there. This was my favorite, some of these standing around holding torches would look great
