loud thumping in our floor.....

Me and my husband have lived in our home for a little over a year. A couple days ago during the day I heard these loud thumping noises. So loud I was convinced they were from some sort of truck or machine outside. Then again tonight me and my husband are sitting and watching tv and suddenly LOUD thumps again. We finally found them coming from under my son's room floor. These thumps shake the floor! I work overnight so I'm at work and my husband texts me that he's been in bed for about 30 mins and the thumps are back again!! What could cause this noise and why haven't we heard it before this week? The floor where we hear it the loudest is my son's room which is right above the garage. We checked for area where animals maybe got in but can't find one area where any could get in. We've had mice but this is a thumping noise and WAY TOO LOUD to be mice. Help please any possible explanations would ease our minds.

Garage door opener, your son pounding on the floor, heating ducts too tight against joists, last but not least, your place could be haunted.

Maybe something bad, maybe something good. I guess we'll never know, 'cause you're going to guard it. You won't touch it, will you?

House has settled some and you now have something binding and when it expands or contracts with temperature change it makes racket when it breaks free. Classic ghost. Lived in an apartment long ago that had hot water heat. Pipe in the dining room wall did this every time it heated up and every time it cooled down. Irritating!

Update your profile to include a location.

Because if you're in an area where the seasons are changing it could be related to that. As in, your HVAC system might be the culprit. Do you have air ducts or radiators? With radiators it could be the pipes banging as the circulator pump goes on/off. Or it could be air ducts expanding/contracting.
