Looking for opinions

So call me not quite as green as I thought I was so I am looking for some rationale to appeal to those greener than myself. I have some new neighbours (renters) who share a fence with me. It's just your typical 6' tall wall of boards, stained, rickety and about to be painted on my side anyway.

They like to hang laundry out to dry which is fine by me but today I found the fence covered in bedding. Being honest, it looks like crap. I don't like looking at it. I don't like having it hanging in my yard. Still being honest I don't want to appear to be a cranky jerk either when I tell them to cut it out, so I am looking for a better reason than 'it looks like crap, use your clothes line'.

So, does hanging wet bedding all over a wooden fence all day mean the fence boards could be damaged (especially since the stain is wearing off on both sides)?

Yes, I agree, that would look like crap and I would not like it either.

Tell them that the stain emits harmful "things" onto their bedding and they would not want to breath that in as they sleep. Tell them "you heard it somewhere."

Or wash your bedding and put it over theirs.

I would just say.

"Could you not hanging cloths on the fence... sorry... we don't like the look of it"...

I think that is a good enough reason.

I agree! Tell them that you put a sealer on the fence and you are worried that it will rub off on their laundry.

Or remove (by cutting) the part of their laundry that hangs over and tell them that it was on your side, so that part belongs to you

Or top your side of the fence with barbed wire!

Install a bird feeder next to the fence and fill it full of nice dark berries for the birdies to feast on....

Thanks for the ideas. They finally moved their stuff and I noticed some of the old stain had soaked into one of the sheets all by itself...bwahhahah. Maybe that will deter them from doing that again.
