Load Bearing Wall Removal Question! Please Help!
Ok I have a 1960's Twin in Philadelphia. Let's say the house faces EAST?!
The floor joist of the first floor (as seen in the basement) run North to South. The house is about 16 feet across (n to s). There is a wall that divides the kitchen and dinining room that runs East to West. There is a section of wall that my wife wants to remove about 5 feet of. I KNOW that nobody here can give me a DEFINITE 100% answer without seeing the wall. BUT can you tell me what I would need to look for to determine if it is load bearing?
Also if it IS a LB wall, and we were to remove 5 feet making it like a half wall or pass thru LEAVING framing in place and maybe taking out one stud in the middle but double up the ends would that be safe?

If so, it's Probably bearing quite a Load....
The header carries the load from above to the added support on each side...
I am not certain I understand your post. You say you want to remove approximately 5 feet of a potentially load bearing wall, and "remove say one stud". If your studs are like most houses, they are 16 inches on center, and you are going to need to remove approximately 4 studs to do what I think you want to do.
Do a search on this forum for "header" or "remove load bearing wall", you will find numerous threads on how to determine if a wall is load bearing, how to install a header, design considerations for headers, and related matters.
