Default leave window unit in window?

how many of you leave your window ac units in over the winter?
I've never done it before, and am nervous i will lose too much heat.

I've never left my window unit in a window, not a great seal
I have built a window unit into the wall
In the winter I had an insulated trimmed box that would fit over it from the inside
I tried an outside cover (material) - but too think
The metal casing of the AC itself will transfer cold into the house

i am finding it's harder harder to get help lifting the dam@ thing out. my pop helped me a few years ago and we dropped it (a older unit i've since replaced); he, as he always is, was in a rush (another thread for another board ...).

Please, take it out! trust me, a month of Ice Cold will convince you.

Think about having to deal with it in even colder, nastier weather!!

I would like to suggest getting a new, LIGHTER air conditioner. The cost today is so much better than it used to be, and we don't need the huge monsters we used to have to buy.

My HVAC brother proved this to me years ago, and I'm so glad he did.

I'm renting right now, and it had a very heavy air conditioner when I moved in, and it was the first thing I took out. The new one is so light that I put it in myself, and have had no trouble with it at all, AT HALF THE BTU's! Cheap too!

Because my husband and son are handicapped, and can't help, I have to think of things like this. If possible, and you decide to take it out, try to pick up a lighter air conditioner.

You won't regret it, and you won't freeze this winter either!

That's why I built mine into the wall
Too heavy to move every year & I don't like to block the window/light

I had one in an upstairs room years ago and just got tired of moving it, I made a box using soft foam that fit snugly over the ac. Two slabs of foam covered the space on either side of the window. It worked very well. I ended up leaving the two slabs on year round. If this is a bedroom you might be able to cover the foam with cloth to make it look better.

I only keep the 1.5 ton in, since it is too large to remove, plus the window was modified when the older unit that this one replaced was in. When ever we get around putting in Central Air, the window will be replaced with a newer Double Glaze.
