Laminate Countertops

We are looking at pricing some laminate countertops for our kitchen. Nothing fancy, just an upgrade from older laminate. We have approx. 30 linear feet. Any ideas on what I could expect to spend on laminate?

Pros or cons of doing laminate myself or installing precut laminate countertops?

As for the cost, that's easy to find out.

Preformed tops look very nice, if you do not have a corner seam.

As for doing it yourself, Laminate is easy to install with proper training; without training, it is even easier to screw up.

That depends on:

The laminate material chosen: premium or economy?
Desired Counter thickness: standard or non standard?
Standard edge
Bullnose edge
If bullnose - Backsplashes attached?
Other custom edging?
No backsplashes?
With backsplahes?
Height of backsplash?
etc.

Since there are so many options, you might want to just price them up at a store.

Have you looked into just resurfacing your current tops? Lowe's sells a countertop resurfacing kit for about $200 I think, and from what I have seen, there are many color options. I am yet to give it a try but I have watched some how to videos and it looks extremely easy. The product is put out by Rustoleum and you can find it in the paint section of the store. Good luck whichever way you go.

Thanks,

If your zip code is nowhere near a Menards, type in 68104. You'll at least be able to get an idea here.

Before we sold our last house we put in counter tops ourselves. Wife helped and she did a great job. We bought 2 sheets form Hd and paid around $160 for them. Then two cans of glue, rollers, and borrowed a counter top router from the boss. Install took 6 hours and we did it one night after work. Actually easier then you think to do. Total was just under $250 for everything and it was well worth it. The laminate we picked out looked like granite and was a great product to work with. I would suggest if you do it yourself to buy a cheap iron and use that to help heat up the old laminate before removing it. Also install the sides first, then route excess off, then install top and do a final trim and you are done.
