lag screw newb question

I apologize in advance for this newb question. Remounting a TV on the wall but threw out the instructions. The screw size is 1/2" head, but says 8.8 on it. I just need to know what size pilot hole to drill.

Thanks in advance!

lag screw newb question

The 8.8 may be the metric diameter of the screw ( major diameter ). The pilot hole should be approximately the root diameter of the screw (minor diameter ). In a scrap piece of lumber try boring a 9/32" hole and see if it be something you could approve of. If that seems too loose try a 1/4".

lag screw newb question

8.8 is a metric designation and I can't find any charts that show head size vs. pilot drill size. I would pick a drill bit slightly smaller in diameter than the root of the lag threads.

Ayuh,.... A 1/2" head on a metric bolt is a 13mm head, the 8.8 is the grade of metal,....

A 13mm head on a lag bolt would have 8mm threads, so a 3/16" drill for wood,...
