Kwikset Deadbolt Removal Issues

Hello there,
I have a kwikset deadbolt set on my front door in my new house. I purchased a smartlock that attaches to my deadbolt turner, however I've have had some issues in the process. I need to access the screws to unscrew the deadbolt, however they are behind a faceplate/cover with the deadbolt turner on top of it. I can pop the faceplate back a little bit, however I cannot remove it without removing the deadbolt turner. There is a little hole on the side of the deadbolt turner for a hex Allen wrench that requires a 1/16th wrench size (confirmed via email by kwikset). I have tried sizes close to that yet didn't get an actual 1/16th until tonight.
The problem now is that either the hole seems stripped, or it doesn't seem to have something that would actually unscrew. I just want to remove the deadbolt turner and access the screws on my front door deadbolt! I have received the idea to try an EZ out and will try that out. Do you guys have any other ideas?!

That set-screw looks to have been SMURFED by someone that did not know what they were doing.

If you cannot get the correct hex tool to work, you will need to drill it out and replace it.

Maybe you can just replace the lever, but getting one might be a task.

Be gentle with it, it is only a brass fitting.

Thank you for the response! What would be the process of drilling it out?

Re: Kwikset Deadbolt Removal Issues

Getting room for a drill in there might be hard, but worth a try.

You need a bit the same size as the hole the screw is in, then a drill small enough to go straight into the screw hole, I suggest a 1/4 inch electric drill (corded), as a start, or maybe a Right Angle attachment on a drill.

Maybe a Dremel might be small enough to drill it.

Go slow and straight, until the set screw is removed, then the lever should easily pull off.

Since the set screw is mangled, you might need to hire a locksmith to do this work, because you can't, and they have many specialized tools to work on these.

Might try a screw extractor on the damaged hex shape before the drill out attempt.

Re: Kwikset Deadbolt Removal Issues

why not drill it out, replace the entire deadbolt mechanism?
