is this just a stupid idea?

So I just bought a house with an unfinished basement. Long story short, I do not have the money to finish even a part of the basement right now. I'd like to have some friends over for poker this summer...how feasible would it be to just throw down some spare carpet, a table and a few chairs, and hang out down there?

would the concrete floor under the carpet just make it too uncomfortable? any cheap fixes you guys could suggest?

thanks...

If the basement is dry then you will be just fine. Being a basement you may need to be running a dehumidifier to keep the dampness down.

Here's what you do, go out and get a cheap tarp, dark green for a poker room, hang it from the floor joist (this will create "the room"), then get a couple of cheap light fixures (like flood lights) and hang them from the ceiling pointing down at the walls,,,,bata-bing, now you have decor, ambiance and a room and you would be surprised how well it works.

Splurge on one of those carpets they sell by the highway. You know, the ones with the tiger on them.... And they are scientifically proven to prevent all related basement problems.

I like Jackofall1 idea of making a 'room' - but I'd use canvas drop cloth - much classier.

I host "Garage Night Poker" all the time... get the BBQ going and set up some tables in the garage. Toss a TV out there...good-to-go.

Everyone wants to get up and head out for a smoke etc. during breaks. I found the garage to be the place for summer poker nights.

Improve your game or you'll never get enough $ to finish the basement.

ahh poker nights at a friends house. that takes me back. We used to play all night wouldnt leave till about 6am Sunday morning. Never bothered to put carpet down though. If beer got spilled to much of a pain to clean. Not that beer should get spilled in the first place.

A carpet rug over a concrete floor is luxury accommodations for a bunch of guys playing poker!

Several years ago, before our sons were married, they'd occasionally bring a bunch of their friends with them when they'd come home. One time we had 19 guests - all college age. The unfinished basement was wall-to-wall air mattresses, and that's where all the guys stayed. They loved it.

Clean & dry is good enough!

He could even get camo tarps - assuming he wants to go up-scale!
