Just bought a money pit

Uh, I mean I just bought a house. It has plaster walls and I was wondering how I should go about mounting items like curtain rods and whatever else I end up needing to hang. Once I find the studs will I be able to nail or screw through the plaster or will I need to drill a starter hole first?

Thanks Bill. Any other general guidelines. Been reading and searching here so I feel pretty good, but I want to minimize my learning by mistake.

Predrilling holes will help reduce or prevent chipping and cracking. If this is rocklath plaster, no special care is needed. If woodlath plaster, don't force the drill, let the bit do the work. Forcing the drill may push out the lath.

Be careful with the plaster. If you crack it today, there is a possibility of finding a 5gallon bucketful of plaster in the floor tomorrow.

Thanks guys I appreciate the help. Great forum glad I found it.

Now I'm just filled with confidence. I'll run down the road and get that 5 gallon bucket.

I live in house with plastered walls! These are as hard as rock. Can only be drilled with a Carboloy drill bit! For picture hanging, I would recommend the 3M, 2 sided tape hangers. Then if you need to change a location of a picture, a tab is pulled and the mounting is released! If you have any cracks, they are easily repaired, using fibre glass drywall tape. just paste the tape over the crack and then smooth it over with drywall compound!
