Joist hangers for this?

Had an engineer out to check out my house basement and he thought I could find hangers for this kind of setup:

Ie, a hanger that would work with the existing rough-cut 2x4 "hanger" board. I already have some standard rough-cut hangers and have put them up in a few places, but most of the basement was built like this.

And it's been that way for how long without a problum?
LVL hangers come in a wider width.

Why did he suggest adding them, is there another issue?

This was one of the better areas. A few spots had gaps where the joists had shrunk or the house had shifted slightly over 90 years. I have some rough cut hangers, but could only use them on two joists that happened to be butted up against the center beam completely, instead of lapped over the 2x4 you see in this pic.

The bad areas are bad -- he thought that the house had settled as much as it's going to, but that it wouldn't be a bad idea to shore up what I have.

I first thought it would be better to saw off the ends of the joists, and replace the rough cut 2x4 with a rough cut 2x8 -- then use standard hangers against that. He didn't think it would be worth the trouble, and thought that Strong-Tie might make something special.

Get a hanger that is wide enough and high enough, then 'pack out' the upper area so it is flush with the 2x4 or whatever, use nails that go all the way into the main header/joist/etc.

I would also use construction adhesive on the material you use to 'pack out' to the same thickness

I guess he means to add blocking between the joist.

Got it - understand just what you're going for.
