joint compound question

Newbie here asking a question for an older relative who isn't web saavy.


Can you use joint compound instead of plaster of paris, on plaster walls?

Yes and no.

Its Ok for thin repairs, skim coats, etc.

If its a major hole, or deep, a 'setting' type compound would be recommended.

Pro, don't you use the setting type for everything? Air dry is on the top of my aggravation list.

No, the setting type is not my ideal surface for painting, and it's a big no-no to hang wallpaper over. If I need to use a setting type 'hot mud', I always use a drying layer as the final coat. And prime it well.
