installing vinyl siding on dormers

Hi all, I am new but looks like great site. We just tore the old wood siding off our dormers when we had the roof replaced. We went down to studs and re-sheeted them with 7/16osb covering that with typar house wrap. We used weatherguard (ice) both on the roof and up the walls about a foot and then step flashing which also laps up the walls about 2", My question is, we are planning to install vinyl siding this week and we were wondering how do you put on the J-channel for the siding to sit into up the roof without nailing into and tearing up the weatherguard and step-flashing?

Agreed, keep the J up one inch from the roof. Typically the ice and water membranes are self sealing to the nails so you should be fine.

Just to mention, be sure to tape the Typar seams and laps for a Water Resistant Barrier. The vinyl will let water through the locking seams and especially at the "J" channel. http://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=...WrZBbBZoIUXgxw

You definitely don't want any water getting to the osb because it will slowly breakdown. Even tape the bottom edge of the H.W. behind the "J" channel, you need to completely protect the sheathing. http://sidingmaster.com/documents/Ne...ngmoisture.pdf
Keep it dry! And, welcome to the forums!
