I'm popping off some old vinyl or plastic tiles that are on my kitchen wall. Is the old mastic (pale/yellowish brown) an asbestos hazard if I take an orbital sander to it?

You can't relly tell unless you put some of it under a microscope. You can send it out for testing or you can borrow or buy a low cost scope to check it out. Asbestos examples are easily accessed on the net for comparison.
