ideas to fix leak from tub overflow faceplate

Hi,
wanted to get your ideas for a temporary 6mth solution. The picture is from the back of my bathtub, i believe it's the tub overflow faceplate. you can see evidence where the gasket(?) or seal seems to be compromised and as a result water is leaking down the tub, and dropping on my living room ceiling below.

I was thinking that for now (finances are tight and i am not that handy a person) that if i put a bead of silicone caulk from the tubside onto the the circumference of the gasket, that will solve the problem? i don't want to do this if it will cause worse problems down the road.

Any other suggestions to give me a 6 month fix? thanks in advance.

IF that's actually the source of your leak, then simply replace the gasket.

And what are you planning to do 6 months down the road? A gut remodel?

yes, possible remodel in 6-8 months. how hard to change the gasket, do i have to undo any plumbing, or do i just remove the screws, get the gasket off and put the screws back?
thanks

There's suppose to be a gasket under the cover on the other side inside the tub.
Sure the two screws are not just loose?
