Be sure the joints are aligned and sealed with gutter mastic. Each joint should be attached with pop rivets. The gutter should have a straight line (no sags) and pitched towards the downspout. If all of these things are addressed you should have no problems. Be sure to clean the joints completely prior to applying the mastic.

joints as in two pieces joined, or where the downspouts connect? or both? i've had limited success with short-term repairs of cleaning the area completely and using a silicone caulk. however, your best bet, if you're handy on a ladder, is to call any service that makes seamless on the spot and you do the install, MUCH cheaper that way!

No much better, but much more money. Use Gutter mastic ... better than silicone, but silicone Type I will work also. Clean area with denatured alcohol first.

Did you try caulking that joint at all? If not you may want to try that. If you have done that maybe you can try standing away from your gutter and looking along side of it to see if the joint is creating a dam. Damming is very common with gutters if not properly installed.

This is one of the reasons people go with seamless gutters.

Reminds me of one of the job estimates I am working on. About 80 apt units with gutters and seams above every entry door. Huge ice build ups and drainage problems. Going to replace with seamless.....Geniuses:
