how to "smooth out" exposed aggregate

Hello,
We hired a local contractor and put exposed aggregate concrete for our backyard patio last summer with this crew. It looks really nice but it hurts a lot with bare feet and when my little kids fall they immediately scrape and bleed. Obviously the pebbles are very sharp.

What should we do? We deeply regret spending our hard earned money for this project. Any advise is greatly appreciated.

Which type of exposed ag is it? Is it the epoxy/rock or is it the washed ag in cement mix? Where are you?
