How to remove screw stuck in the wood?

While trying to remove the broken sliding door lock, a long screw inside the latch through the wood can't be removed -- it's stuck inside the wood. Plyers wouldn't go into such a small space; the screw head is also messed up -- could you help with ideas to remove this screw? What can I use to carve the screw head so that I can use my screw driver to unscrew it?

How to remove screw stuck in the wood?

Looks like someone tryed to use the wrong sized screw driver to get it out.
A set like this will do one of two things get it out or drill off the head of the screw so the plate can be removed, then the screw should be loose in the hole.

The head of the screw can be removed by drilling straight into the head with a drill bit that is the same diameter as is the shaft diameter of the screw. Just keep drilling in until the head pops off.
Once the latch assembly is removed, grab the shaft of the screw with needle nose vice grip pliers and turn it out.

Sometimes, if the screw is bitten hard into the metal as well, you can try rotating the latch itself counterclockwise, and see if the screw head moves with it. I have had a few times doing this backs the screw out just a tiny bit enough to back it out slowly.

You can also use a dremel tool with a thin cut wheel to crave out a deeper slot on the screw to use a flat head screw driver.

Or worse case scenerio a screw extractor.

All else fail use an angle grinder to grind off the screw head to remove the latch, then grind it flush with the wood, hopefully the new latch will have holes in a different spot.

I've also had good luck with one of these.
It's made to be struck with a hammer and the bit turns as it's driven.
Not very expencive and comes with several differant bits.
Any auto supply should have one.
I used to use one all the time when I worked on motorcycles and it would pop out even the cheap soft screws they use.

How to remove screw stuck in the wood?

I encountered a similar "opportunity" and found a screw extractor to be the answer. I used this forum to figure it out, and you can see my challenges and successes here:Broken off bolt For starters get the largest sized extractor possible...approximately $2.56 at HD.

Glad to help.

How to remove screw stuck in the wood?

that is an andersen door latch and that screw is about 3'' long

try using a no.2 or 3 square drive,if they don't work you can pull the inside trim and cut it off where it passes thru the door then just pull it out
