"You’ll probably take on a few projects that will require being able to reach spaces that are high above the ground. You could easily go to your nearest home improvement store and pick up any old ladder to use, but not choosing the correct ladder could introduce dangerous safety hazards that put you at risk of being injured." The Right Ladder for the Job
I am curious, how many different types of ladders do you own and use?

How Many Different Types of Ladders Do You Own?

I am down to....
16' aluminum extension ladder
6' aluminum step ladder
6' fiberglass step ladder
aluminum gorilla ladder that will go up to 8' as a step ladder or 14 feet as a straight ladder

I used to have 28' and 32' fiberglass extension ladders but I sold them my house is a ranch.

As few as possible. I don't like them but the are necessary. 26 foot extension fiberglass type I, 16 ft extension type II and a 6 foot step wood step ladder

How Many Different Types of Ladders Do You Own?

As a painter I have a few.......no more 40 footers that's for sure.

1 24 footer, 2 16 footers, 2 8 footers, half a dozen 6 footers, and numerous 2 to 4 foot step ladders which I use more than anything.

I have a 2-step thingie with a high handle. Great for just changing a light bulb.

I have one 3 foot work platform which is great for painting.

I have a 6 foot aluminum step ladder. I don't use it much, but it is very light weight.

I have a 13 foot gorillia ladder. It is okay, but a little bit too small to be that handy.

I have a 17 foot gorilla ladder that I use for everything. I can set it up OVER a bush. I can set it up on stairs. I can get up on the roof. It is only one more step than the 13 foot ladder, but stretched all the way out, that gives me an extra 4 feet. This one is sold online only at Home Depot.

I have a 24 foot extension ladder. I got it for free and it is nice and light, but too often it's just not long enough.

I have a 28 foot extension ladder that I use for anything I can't reach with the gorilla.

At my old job, a 32 foot extension ladder was kind of the standard. I find that the 28 is much easier for one person to handle. And I rarely run into a situation where I wish I had that extra foot or two.

I used to have a 40 foot ladder, but I just had very little use for it and it scared the crap out of me. So I got rid of it.

My wife's short so at least 3 step stools...maybe more.

One 6 foot aluminum step ladder.
One 17 foot gorilla ladder
One 24 foot fiberglass extension ladder

The gorilla ladder is heavy and a pain to set up but, I'll admit that it's versatility means I use it a lot. It's been great on stairs. Besides it's easy to get to.

I only use the extension ladder to change the floodlights under the eaves on my second story.

The step ladder would probably get used more but, it's not stored in a convenient place.

On a further note, I DO NOT like ladders that are heavy. Than includes fiberglas ladders and those Little Giant ladders that weigh about 100 lbs. They destroy shoulder joints.

Isn't that the truth.....I still have a 40 but havn't been on it for years. I still use it ocasionally as a table when I have some sort of production line going on. I still have a 32 but it doesn't get much use as what it was intended for either.

What I do use all the time is a 28' a 20, 2-16' a couple of 8 and 6' step ladders. I wish I had a couple of 4's but if after all af these years and I still havn't added them to the collection I probally never will.

Then there's the planks, 2-24, 2-20 and 2-16's and a pile of ladderjacks. I won't get into the aluminum pump jack list but I have respectable pile of that stuff too. I know the poles arn't ladders but the sure do a great job of getting you up there.

I don't have a ladder. I'm really tall.

Either that or I flip down the tailgate on my truck and back it close to what I need to reach.

I hate heights.

Almost killed myself on a 4' ladder.

When I first started roofing in 1979 the guy I worked for had a 40 foot wood extension ladder. That thing was a beast to stand up. It even had a name...Woody ...go figure. Later he acquired a used 40 foot aluminum ladder, considerably lighter than Woody. His name "Big Al, the roofers pal"

How Many Different Types of Ladders Do You Own?

I've got a nice collection---most are fiberglass--

Long ago I bought one of those folding aluminum ladders---the ones with 4 sections---

I bought it for use as a chop saw stand--workes great for that--but as a ladder?
I think its comical---the Three Stooges could have made a fun skit with that thing---

Carry the ladder on end that way you can just walk over set it down and extended it. I hate carrying them horizontally. Only problem with carrying it vertically is with 32' and above if it's windy you need to mind that, and trees in the way.

Thats how I carry all ladders, even the heavy 40' we have. one of them is the style where the rails are stacked on top of each other not hooked in side.

Another commercial roofing company went out of business here a number of years back they had a 65' triple section. We thought about buying it but we don't have a crane to set it up! In all seriousness if the building is that tall it should have a hatch you can use. We've made 5' high bases to set a 40' on for some jobs. I've got zero interest in the guys setting up a 65' ladder.

Edit: I should say use to on the 40' it has been a number of yeas since I've manhandled one. 32 I can still fully extend by my self though. :D
