how do you keep birds away from house exterior?

Hello,

we live in a house that has a lot of trees/bushes near the property almost touching the property.

Nowadays, with the colder weather in GA, I am hearing birds knocking on the exterior of the house near the roof/gutters. I haven't spotted them, yet and not sure what type of bird it is, but is makes lots of knocking noises.

What can we do to keep these birds away from the roof/exterior? I am not sure if cutting trees/shrubs would help.

and does homeowners policy cover any costs?

Please advise. Thanks

Are you saying birds are nesting in opportune spots up and in your house?

In any case, cut anything that is touching your house. No plants should be contacting the exterior of your house.

Might be a squirrel or a rat you should identify what is making the noise before you want answers on how to get rid of them.

I heard Georgia had a local infestation of Archaeopteryxs' of late. Large bird like creatures that love to nest in trees, close to houses.
They can get testy, so have a at least a shotgun handy if you go out at night.
This was on the Tardis website, so I don't know how valid the posting was.

I have the same problem here in upstate NY but I have actually seen the birds that do it, & they are definitely woodpeckers. They have trashed many of the fascia boards as well as the corners at several locations on the house. The siding & trim are all cedar & something I will be fixing next year.

Something important to understand is that woodpeckers eat insects. They find them because they can hear them inside the wood, usually a dead tree, but it can also be a house. I've done some repairs already & have found insects, mostly ants, behind the siding. I've been correcting moisture issues as well, which also attracts insects, so you may want to start examining other issues you may have on the house.

At the one or two areas they were attracted to most, I hung a small plastic bag with a zip tie. It moved in the breeze & worked temporarily like a scarecrow, but like most animals, they got used to it & continued their ways. The "knock" on the house is annoying & costly.

I understand woodpeckers poke holes for three reasons:

a) insects
b) attract a mate
c) build nesting sites

I assume because of the season that b) is out. I don't know if option c) is seasonal, but my experience suggests that the type of damage may indicate intent. Large holes and voids suggest nesting. Random damage suggests bugs.

A box of squirrels was brought over from England by a University of Illinois in the 1800s to beautify the campus. With no predators, they have multiplied into the millions and chew holes through facia and are a total nuisance. Some years back, starlings became a real pest problem too and they used the same ingress/egress the squirrels did. The only solution was to lay out poison for them. Things were literally falling out of the sky into daycare playgrounds and freaking out the kids rather like a Hitchcock film.

I tried everything to get rid of squirrels and birds including hiring a trapper. I finally called an exterminator and he sprayed some "essence of fox" stuff that was odorless to me and pets but sent the squirrels scurrying out of the attic at a speed I could not believe. I had to let him poison the starlings.

The key to it all after that was being diligent about keeping gutters clean so there was nothing attractive to birds in the debris and making sure all the ingress/egress points were repaired and no longer availed.
