Hello, I have a outdoor patio area with a roof. The roof has rafters running across about 18" apart. The rafters are about 15 ft long. I'd like to hang a 100 lb heavy bag near the center of this patio area and wanted to know what I need to have a secure mounting point.
If I could connect a piece of wood across 2 or 3 rafters, I could insert an IBolt through this board possibly. Question is, what is the correct way to join these pieces of wood together (board to rafters)? I don't have access to above the rafters. Details would be greatly appreciated and I probably won't understand most fancy words I've seen when googling around. Please help!
You could run a 2x4 perpendicular to the rafters, secured with lag screws. You could drill a hole through one rafter and loop a carabiner through it and secure another carabiner to it. OR, my favorite :
You could anchor (lag bolt) a length of angle iron across some rafters (I'd catch 3 at least) from the bottom and then use a shackle to hang the bag from. Make sure the iron and shackle is heavy enough to support the weight. Paint before you put it up to match the ceiling.
