You need a video capture card and software installed in your computer---chances are yours came with at least something basic for this. You can use what came with your computer or there are lots of nice freeware and free open source video capture and editing options as far as software. Video cards will not be that expensive if you do not have one.

Basically you hook up the camera or a play back deck to the video card (You may need to be a cord for this). Start the software to begin the capture then play the tape. When transfer is complete turn off the tape playback and then shut off the software and save the captured file.

You can then convert to a variety of video formats, burn files to discs or send them off to cloud storage. The video editing software will have varied levels of sophistication for tweaking your files.

Just make sure you have enough space on the destination hard drive until you edit and burn the digital files to CDs or whatever.

In most areas are also companies that will do this for you for a very reasonable fee. Depending on how many tapes you have that you want converted this may be the most cost-effective and simplest way to do this.

As an alternative to a video capture "card" for your computer, you may also investigate an external capture device (plugs into USB, typically). These, I believe, are pretty common at the normal places, as well as walmart. Of course, they are available online.

Plug your RCA cables into one of these, capture your video with the included software (mine came with pinnacle), save. Easy.

That looks exactly like the type of device I used. I am, however, a little surprised that they don't specify output file type. I am not sure if this is a problem, but I think I would double check.

Another thing...make sure you have a device that plays your cassettes, and has a composite output (RCA jack, most likely) or s-video. Your camera most likely has one of these, I suspect.
