I am renovating my summer cottage by putting up vinyl siding. I was advised that I should put in a house wrap such as tyvec. Is this necessary? My family does not use the cottage in winter. Currently there is wood siding on building. The cottage is only 200 sq ft and lots of that space is windows and doors.

Tyvek specifically isn't necessary, but it is a heck of a good product. You need something other than plywood behind that vinyl. Vinyl siding will let water in, and you need a membrane to manage it. Felt paper works well, and there are a number of brands of moisture barrier on the market.

If it were my house, it would get Tyvek.

Ditto to thekctermite's post.

House wrap may not be necessary, just like insurance may not always be necessary. But when a circumstance happens, you are happy you have it.
The difference is that, house wrap, when compared to the overall value of your home, is relatively small change. It's serves as a secondary protection, if the primary siding, windows, doors, roof, other.....were to fail, which, they can and often do. It keeps the sub layers protected from moisture, but at the same time, it allows any moisture to vent out. It is like Goretex material, the kind you see harsh environment outerwear made out of, but, for houses.

Moisture is the number one enemy to any structure. When sublayers get wet, they tend to stay wet. Then they rot and attract pests (carpenter ants, etc.) You want to keep the moisture out at all costs. Once it's in, rot, deterioration, and even pest damage can grow rapidly, and, can even cause structural damage.

It's a small investment towards one of the larger investments in life. Why cut such a small, but important "corner"?
