Home Security, need advice

In general burglars (including tweakers) are like any other predator. They want weak/easy prey and don't want to expend allot of calories or risk to themselves to get at what they want. Statistically as I recall the two best crime deterrents are:

A dog. It makes allot of noise and it bites or at least the perception is that it bites even if it doesn't. This is one of those things where being bit is allot more scary than an alarm. Kind of like why a knife is many times more frightening than a gun.

A American flag. It seems that people who fly American flags also tend to be "Conservative"/"Traditional Values" folk and thus tend to own and are prepared to use a gun in defense of their property.

Whenever I park somewhere and there's giant signs that read "permit parking only, unauthorized vehicles will be towed at owner's expense" I always breathe a sigh of relief because I know my car will not get towed. It's those parking lots that either don't say anything or the ones that have a tiny sign with only a towing company name & phone number that you have to worry about.

Do you guys think this theory carries over to houses as well? What I mean is are there a lot of homeowners out there who go out and buy the "protected by xxx companY" and doesn't buy the actual equipment?

I've seen a sign at a house that reads as follows; "This property is protected by Smith & Wesson"! and it's not an alarm manufacturing company.!
