home gym on carpet

Long story short we are turning our spare room into a home gym, my concern is that the carpet in that room is almost brand new. Do most people put down mats or anything under the machines? I am worried the machine may possibly sling grease/oils? (if they even have any?)

We just bought a commercial quality elliptical off Craigs List and are now searching for a recumbent bike treadmill, and then a small rack of free weights.

We just want to keep the room looking good

Thanks!

I'm going with the horse mats, you buy them at the feed stores. The freeweights will tear up the carpet. I've got hardwood going down soon, the mats will cover the whole workout area. The horse mats aren't cheap, I think it was $40 for a 4x6, and you'll need a few... but they last forever.

These are NOT the foam spongy mats, those break down too quick.

In my basement, I just put down a rug under the entire thing in case of leaks, and then put those plastic car mats under the main parts of the equipment to keep from hurting the carpet. If you don't mind it looking a little odd, then I'd recommend this!
