hollow core cut off

I have a hollow core door that is wood, we installed carpet in a room that previouly had none and now the door won't close. Can i just cut off a strip of wood fromt he bottom? How thick is the wooden block on the bottom? Thanks, Dan.

Hi Dan,
I have generally seen the bottom block to be about 1 1/2" thick. But a couple of door I have worked with had thinner ones, or may have already been cut some. You could probably detect the solid block using one of the sonic style stud finders. If you do cut all the way threw the solid part. You can get veneer part of the cut off block off and size it to fit again in the hollow section of the door. Use good quality wood glue and clamps to re fasten it if need be.

Cut the Door

I've done it before, just cut it off but be carefull with the blade you use not to tear up and spinter the exterior surface which is very thin.. use masking tape over the outside, run your pencil line over the masking tape, cut thru the tape and door at the same time, will save the thin surface from splintering. the bottom filler is about 2" x 2" so if you cut more then that off the bottom will be hollow so just glue in the pice you cut off after you remove the thin facing. which may be glued and stapled on. or just cut another piece for it by ripping a 2x4 to size which is easier then trying to save the old piece. , go problem at all as long as you don't tear up the door or the finish.. while making your cut..
