Hole in H2O heater

So my brothers water heater has a hole in the top of it. Don't know how it got there but is there a patch or other fix for it.

Sounds like it is time to get a new water heater.

Seriously, water heaters are pressure vessels. You don't want to screw around with band-aid fixes for this, it's not safe. There isn't a $5 patch kit for stuff like this.

Could this be a rust hole through the casing?
Try to put in a little more detail into the posts. Makes it easier to repond.
How old is the unit?

Mike, and people do not think that water heaters are ticking time bombs.

Well it turns out the leak came from the slot where the anode goes. He ended up getting a new heater that morning anyways. Thanks for all the responses.
