Help repairing fence post CAP 5 1/2 x 5 1/2

I have several posts of a fence just reinstalled because of a road project that has caps (wooden) that need repaired. To buy replacement would be quite expensive. I would like to repair these but cannot find trim. The tops are good but the trim that fits around the base that goes over the post is missing on some. Any suggestions!! Have about 14 post on my property but the fence runs along a main highway where fence continues on to neighbors property so I want to keep look as is... Dean

Help repairing fence post CAP 5 1/2 x 5 1/2

I've made hundreds of these things over the years. How you fix it depends on the tools you own or have access to. I normally use a 3/4" cove bit in a router to mill a profile in the edge of a 2x4 or 2x6 and then rip it in a table saw to yield a small piece of moulding. I use exterior wood glue and brads to secure the trim to the cap, and galvanized finish nails to secure the trim to the post.

It is easy, but you gotta have the right tools!
