help me light my fire place....please

i searched around and cound'nt find a ansewr so here we go. i am trying to light this fire place but cant get any flame. i have turned the black knob to pilot and pressed the igniter button but no flame.

1.the red valve at the right of the picture i believe is in the off position...is that correct?

2.i can see the igniter sparking but no flame.

3.what is the brass thing next to the pilot knob?

That means that you need to look for a gas shutoff. Trace the pipe to where it intersects with either your water heater, furnace, etc. That means getting into the crawlspace if you have one, basement, etc.

I'm going to take a long-shot here and ask if you're pressing the knob down - on pilot - as you strike the igniter.

If this is the typical thermocoupler set up, until the thermocoupler is hot enough to keep the gas on, you have to hold that button down in order to get gas to the igniter.

Also, it is not uncommon for thermocouplers to go bad. The good news is that they're not expensive, and usually fairly easy to replace.
