Heat trace eaves

Think it's ok to heat trace right ontop of the aluminum gutter guards in my eaves instead of looping it on the roof? I live in London, Ontario so we get snow and ice but I've been told the tracing can degrade the asphalt shingles and I can't see why running it directly on the gutter guard would t achieve the same effect!
