Having trouble hanging curtain rods/drilling into plaster

Im trying to hand curtain rods for my sons room
and I know from experience from the bedroom that when I drill the plaster just crumbles and its very difficult.

The wall is basically plaster then brick.

I will drill a pilot hole, then screw in the screws for the holders and the plaster will just crumble and it will meet heavy resistance when it hits the bricks.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

You are going to need a masonry bit for the brick and it needs to be large enough in diameter for screw anchors. Insert the anchors in the holes you drilled with the masonry bit. Then your screws go into the anchors (usually lead for brick). Your real hardware store can advise you on the bit and anchors you need for the screw size. You MIGHT get lucky and find an apron person, if you have time to chase one down, at a box store that knows what either is.

Throw the screws that came with the drapery hardware away. They are usual sub-standard and you are likely to strip the heads on them. Spend a few cents for new, real screws if at a real hardware store. The box store ones in little plastic bags will be as bad or worse.

You will never get screws alone to work in this situation.

However, there should be a wood header part of your window framing. Are you sure you can not fasten into that are does the hardware have to go much wider than the window frame and hence you are into the plaster and brick situation?

The idea is to drill into the BRICK and only go *through* the plaster to get there. You'll need a masonry bit and maybe a hammer drill and very likely some different hardware too.

the way our windows are made there is maybe a couple milimeters of wood at the top and sides.
The plaster kind of rolls around the edge.
Ill see if I can post pics in a bit.
