"If you are interested in home improvement or DIY projects you may be aware of the pallet craze. Wooden pallets are used for many industrial and commercial applications to store and move inventory but once they are finished, many businesses discard them. If you can come across free pallets you have the materials needed to make an unlimited array of DIY projects for use around the home." Three Simple Pallet Projects to Do at Home

you have to be careful, many of the wood pallets are treated for pests and fire proofing that are toxic for an enclosed environment inside the house, but for outside they are great, many are made from hardwood like oak..planter boxes, benches, fencing, the list is endless with ones imagination..

Re: Have you built any projects out of pallets?

A shut the box game. I scored, the pallet was made of walnut (at least it smelled like walnut). All other wood was reclaimed mahogany.

A pallet map with woodburning.

Another pallet wood map of old Route 66. I was trying to make it look like a postcard from one of the tourist traps along the Mother Road.

That's all I have pictures of for now.

If you were dead broke, I guess it would be worth your time to spend days finding that perfect new pallet that hadnt been damaged yet, but they are few and far between, and will still always have nail holes in them. Nice straight wood planks are cheap enough from the lumber store to save the time and just buy the sizing and species you want and get the project going

Another warning, pallet wood can also be utility hardwoods that no one wants for furniture or flooring and can be incredibly hard. Hard to cut, hard to drill, etc. Kind of like the shaft on hockey sticks.

Sometimes the project is about artistry or a challenge. As an observer I would find the map made out of pallets much more fascinating than if it were made from some "store bought" wood planks or finish grade plywood.

Most all pallets have code stamped on them that tells contry of origin and what sort of treatment it may have had.
If one googles pallet codes or "are pallets safe to use" you can find information on how to interpret those codes.
