Hardi siding as backerboard

I have a bunch of leftover Hardipanel 4 x 8 siding scraps that I am thinking of using as backerboard for some interior tiling jobs. Is there any reason not to do this? I assume that the material is essentially the same, but maybe not? I asked the same question of the support folks at Hardi and I got a very generic reply that said "don't do that", but when I asked why not, they would not give me any explanation. Is there a good reason or are they just trying to sell more product. Any recommendations out there?

Hardi siding as backerboard

its not the same, moisture will swell and soften the siding, don't use it for tile backing

Hardi siding as backerboard

Thanks for the response. That's a little disconcerting that it is designed as siding but can't handle moisture. What am I missing?

try it for yourself, take some and let it get wet on the back you will see how soft and easy to bend it is

the siding is designed to be used in a vertical position allowing it to shed water,2 different products for 2 different uses
