Gas fireplace question - Who will save me?

Alright-- I've been trying to fix this for several months now. Who will be my knight in shining armor?

I called a fireplace company and they want $129 just to come to my house and tell me what the problem is. I don't think so.

I have a gas fireplace that won't start. When I flip the wall-switch I can see the pilot light come on and I can hear the repeated clicking sound which is the fireplace attempting to start. If I'm patient and lucky I can get the fireplace to fire up after about 30 minutes of flipping the switch on and off.

Anyone know how I can go about troubleshooting this problem with spending hundreds of dollars?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Gas fireplace question - Who will save me?

Is the light a flame or a light bulb light?
Is it an electric starter?
I tried to get the install manual, but no go from them any more.

It's a flame pilot. What's the alternative to an electric starter? I'm pretty sure it's electric since it's hooked up to the wall switch, right?

Here's a link to the install manual

I briefly viewed it, but the electrical schematics start around page 31.

Thanks for that. This actually doesn't help me because I already have a paper copy of the manual and I don't know anything about fireplaces or electronics. I was hoping someone who knew about fixing fireplaces might be able to help me. I'd sure like to get this thing fixed but I don't know where to begin.

I'd be looking towards the gas valve first. The ticking is likely the valve attempting to open and allow gas to pass over the pilot, ignite and do what it's supposed to. Of course, turn off your main gas while attempting any repairs.
This is just me guessing too, I've never worked on one of these before.

Not to sound like an azz, but you said "I don't know anything about fireplaces or electronics." Gas fireplaces are nice when they work properly, but when they shut down, there may be an unsafe condition which triggers a safety sensor to shut it off before bad things happen. Isn't the safety of your family worth the $129 it costs to have a tech come out?

It does sound like the flame sensor. You can try to sand the sensor off and clean it up or it could have a crack in the ceramic. The pilot assembly could be bad or the green module could be going bad. You really need someone to come look at it. Where are you located?
