Having trouble with garage door opener. Push button and gear spins, but doesn't raise door. Gear teeth are fine with no shavings in case. Pull release cord and manually open door all the way and push button and door closes as it should. Just when trying to open it it makes a chattering noises and does not raise the door. I inspected the springs and cables and see no evidence that they are broke. Where do I turn next? Thanks.

What gear is spinning? Do you see it spinning? What type opener is this? Belt, chain or screw drive?
If you release the carraige when it's closed, does the opener bring the carraige back to the head?

The gear on the end of shaft in the case spins freely, but there is a chattering sound as if something is stripping. The gear is not jumping itself, but something else is hanging up. It is a Genie screw drive. Let me sound dumb for a second, what is the carriage and let me see about disengaging it to determine the answer to your question.

Okay, I unhooked the arm and the carriage(??) is not returning to the open position. It just sits in the position where it would be if door is closed. Now, reminder...the door operates fine when manually opened and in the up position. It closes properly.

Yes, the carraige is the mechanism that engages the arm attached to the garage door.
Chattering is not a good thing. If you adjust the upward travel limit screw, does it change anything? If you have the instructions, this will be easier to find on the unit. There are 4 adjustment screws. Up & down force and up & down travel limit.
If playing with the up limit screw is fruitless, then the opener unit needs to be taken down and opened up so you can see what's happening inside when the unit is energized.
If the unit is over 10 years old, I would just replace it. I wouldn't put too much money into it.

The carriage (that plastic thing at the end of the metal door) has teeth that lock into the drive screw. If those teeth are stripped off or the "lever" that the red cord hangs from isn't locking then the teeth are gone. Pull on the string one way to disengage, pull the other way to lock it in.

You can buy a new carrage for $20-$25 dollars maybe a bit more from a local Genie Factory dealer, Check the phone book. Also if your carrage isn't black plastic your to old for a replacement.

To change it you need to remove the end of the aluminum rail that is bolted to the header of your garage. Remove the bracket (one bolt, nut, lock washer) and disconnect the carrage from the door arm. Move the rail to one side and slide the old one off and the new one on. Reconnect and tighten everything and you back in business.

NOTE: Based upon what your saying this "should" be the solution to your problem.
